Learn the whole workflow, not just the formula.

Free step-by-step guides to the everyday work of reservoir and production engineers: what goes in, what you do, what comes out, and where people go wrong.

Log-log diagnostic plot of a pressure build-up testPressure change and its derivative against time. The derivative climbs on a unit slope, forms a hump, flattens in radial flow, then doubles at a sealing fault.0.0010.010.111010010000.0010.010.1110Time since shut-in (hours)Pressure change and derivative (psi)Pressure changeDerivative

Radial flow

What you see: The derivative is flat.

What it tells you: The pressure disturbance is moving outward in all directions. The flat level gives permeability-thickness: kh = 70.6 q B μ ÷ level, in oilfield units. This is the most valuable part of the test.

Pick a workflow

Each guide takes 10 to 20 minutes and ends with a short quiz.

From raw well logs to net pay

Turn a set of log curves into zones, porosity, water saturation and a net pay number you can defend.

Field
Reservoir engineering
Level
Beginner
Time
15 min

You finish withA zone-by-zone table of net thickness, average porosity and average water saturation, with the cutoffs you used.

Drawing a well schematic others can trust

Collect the right documents, build casing and completion tables, and produce a schematic that matches what is really in the hole.

Field
Production engineering
Level
Beginner
Time
12 min

You finish withA schematic plus an equipment table, each item with its depth, size, source document and date.

Reading a pressure build-up test

Go from raw gauge data to permeability, skin and boundaries by reading the derivative plot step by step.

Field
Reservoir engineering
Level
Intermediate
Time
20 min

You finish withReservoir pressure, permeability-thickness, skin, and any boundaries seen, with the model match shown on the log-log plot.
